Masterpiece: Film Review – A Mammootty Show All The Way

Verdict: A good festival release for Malayalam movie fans.

Christmas releases have always fascinated every Malayalam movie fan. This year, around five hyped Malayalam films released as Christmas releases and one among these, is the Mammootty starrer Masterpiece. The film is directed by Ajay Vasudev who earlier directed the film Rajadhi Raja (2015) which also starred Mammootty. What is the film all about? Let’s find out.

What is Masterpiece About:

The film starts off as a college drama with two rival groups within the campus – Royal Warriors and Real Fighters. The two groups are at loggerheads with each other and will do anything to protect the members of their group. This may seem like your normal college drama like any other college in Kerala but that’s not the case. It soon turns into a murder-investigative drama. A brutal crime is committed and the suspects soon as mentioned by the Police are the members of the two rival gangs which includes Roshan Cherian, Mahesh (Maqbool Salmaan), Binu, etc. Soon, a new associate professor joins in the English department and he is none other than Mammootty playing the role of Edward Livingston aka Eddy. How he protects the students of his college and how he along with the boys from the two gangs solve the crime is what the film deals with.

What Works:

The very fact that it is Mammootty starrer film, should answer this question. The star’s looks have been amply utilized by the filmmaker with a lot of slow-motion walks, high-speed car chases, and a lot of putting on cool shades. All these were tailored made for Mammootty fans. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar did well as IPS Bhavani Durga. Gokul Suresh, the son of actor Suresh Gopi does a decent job as Unnikrishnan. The other supporting casts – Unni Mukundan as IPS John Thekken, Kalabhavan Shahjon as sub-inspector Ramendran, Mukesh as Prof. Cherian did well too.

What Could’ve Been Better:

There is a scene in the film which involves Saju Navodya playing the role of Manikandan, the college canteen head, which could have been avoided. The character makes a comment about women and rape in a very light manner belittling the crime. The run-time of the film could have been shorter.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Masterpiece is a complete Mammootty show all the way. If you are a fan, you should definitely watch the film.
