Shikkari Shambhu: Film Review – A Comedy Thriller That Doesn’t Disappoint You

Verdict: Kunchako Boban proves yet again that simple movies are his forte.

Shikkari Shambu, directed by Sugeeth and produced under the banner Angel Maria Cinemas, features Kunchako Boban in the lead along with Shivvada, Vishnu Unnikrishnan, Kanaran Hareesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Saddique, Krishnakumar and many other prominent actors. The first half of the movie is a laugh riot and the second half is a suspense ensemble.

What’s Shikkari Shambu About:

Shikkari Shambu revolves around the lives of three small-time thieves – Peelipose AKA Peeli (Kunchako Boban), Achu (Vishnu Unnikrishnan) and Shaji (Kanaran Hareesh). They accidentally hear about Kuruthimalakkavu, where a tiger has been on a prowl, killing people. They also get to know that the person who hunts the animal down would be rewarded with quite some money and this news gets them excited. Their attention soon shifts to the ancient temple in the village and its priceless idol. They decide to take the risk and go to the village disguised as hunters, but with fraudulent intentions. The movie is about this trip of the gang, their innocent efforts to impress the villagers, them finding their love interests, the revelation and Peeli’s plight to find the real culprit.

What Works:

The location and sets will charm you with a real village where technology hasn’t made much impact. Faisal Ali has done a good job with his camera. The background music is pretty decent. Kanaran Hareesh’s comic timing is excellent and Kunchako Boban shines as Peeli. The second half keeps you engaged. The twists and turns that follow are pretty unexpected. You may feel you have figured out the story and the suspense element in the movie, but the instance where the real culprit is revealed, you realize that the director and the writers haven’t made it that simple to figure out, after all. Sugeeth’s fourth outing with Kunchako Boban, Shikkari Shambu is a fun and interesting ride.

What could have been better:

Except for the song Mazha, all other tracks in the movie are average and wouldn’t stay with you for long. Though Shivvada’s character is significant and tries to remind you of Bhanu from Kanmadam, there isn’t much where she could even perform. Salim Kumar and Vishnu  who made a decent debut with ‘ Kattappanayile Hrithik Roshan’ could have been utilized in a much better way. The love track seems a bit clichéd in parts. Except for the title graphics, visual effects are not the strongest attributes of the story. The narrative manages to hook you, regardless.

Why you should watch this movie:

If you are up for some laughter and thrilling experience put together this weekend, Shikkari Shambu would be the right choice.  Vettakaran Peeli and gang would not leave you with any pain or disappointment – just plain entertainment.Book your tickets for this weekend and watch it with your family and friends, and have some fun!
